You MUST ask these 3 questions in your next interview...
Aug 08, 2024Job interviews are tough. No question about that!
Along with presenting in front of a crowd, I would say job interviews are one of the least-liked aspects of building your career.
So when it comes to the dreaded ‘Do you have any questions?’ question in an interview, it's no surprise that most people are often unprepared.
Where most people go wrong
Where so many people go wrong is asking questions that are too focused on themselves, instead of the role and the company they are interviewing with.
Whilst it might be tempting to ask ‘what is your hybrid working policy?’, trust me, there is a time and a place for a question like this.
You are better to use the interview for questions that reflect on your candidacy for the role.
Here’s my 3 MUST-ASK questions for your next job interview
1. What does success look like in this role?
This is a great question to show the hiring team you are thinking about how you can add value in the role.
If you are already asking what success looks like, it shows you want to secure the role and be as successful as possible in it. This is a great message to send to the hiring team.
Plus, whatever answer they give you, take that information and use it to further craft your pitch for the role.
2. What challenges are you trying to solve with this role?
This is a great question, again, to give you information that can help craft and tweak your pitch.
If you know what the challenges are with this role, you can better position yourself as the solution to their problem.
But like the above, this question also shows the hiring team that you are already thinking about how you can make an impact in the role and start solving their problems. This is music to the ears of any hiring team.
3. Do you have any concerns with my experience that I can address for you now?
This question is a power move question and when executed correctly, can go a long way to securing the role.
The most important thing with this question is the delivery. If you get the tone wrong it can come off sounding negative.
But if you deliver it in the right way, it provides a very open platform to address any concerns the hiring team may still have with your experience.
This might sound daunting. But what this question does is twofold.
One, it says to the hiring team ‘I think I'm the best candidate and I’m even confident enough to talk through the concerns you might have’
And two, it actually allows you to address the concerns they might have.
For example, they might say ‘You don’t have enough digital experience’. And this gives you the chance to talk through your digital experience and address it right there and then.
There is nothing worse than hearing the reason you missed out on a role was because of something that you could have addressed in the interview. This question reduces the chance that this happens.
