This ONE Hack Will Transform Your Job Interviews
Nov 21, 2024Is there a worse task in your career than having to interview for jobs? In my opinion, no. I hate job interviews. And so do most people I know.
But I’ve got a game-changing hack that will help you level-up your interview game.
A little warning - you aren’t going to want to do it. It’s cringe and uncomfortable. But my gosh does it work!
What's the hack? Recording yourself in the interview. And watching it back.
Now, I know what you’re thinking: "I don’t want to watch myself!" Trust me, I get it.
But let me tell you - this hack works.
My Story: The Awkward Realisation
When I started my TikTok channel, I was shocked at how many filler words I used in my videos - “um” and “like.” It wasn’t until I recorded and edited myself that I realised how bad it sounded.
I never noticed it when I was talking in the moment, but watching myself back was an eye-opener.
Once I realised this, I made a conscious effort to slow down and use fewer filler words. It made a huge difference in how I came across.
How This Can Help YOU
Recording your job interview will give you the same advantage. It might feel uncomfortable at first, but the insights you’ll gain are so worth it.
Here’s how to do it:
1. Set up your phone on a tripod (or stack some books if you don’t have one) facing you, just like you would for a Zoom call.
2. Hit record.
Obviously, this only works for online interviews, but no one will know you’re recording.
What to Look for When You Watch it Back
Now, let’s talk about what to do once you’ve hit stop on the recording.
You’ll be cringing, but trust me, this is gold.
Here’s what to look for:
1. What questions did they ask?
Make a list. Use these to prep for your future interviews with the same company or similar roles.
2. How did your answers sound?
Were they clear and confident, or could you improve them? Think about how you could answer better next time.
3. Did you get flustered at any point?
If you did, why? What was going through your mind? Knowing where you got rattled helps you prepare for those moments next time.
4. What new info did you learn?
Was there anything shared in the interview that could help you in future conversations with this company? Jot it down.
5. What 3 things would you improve for next time?
Be honest with yourself. Maybe it’s your pacing, tone, or how you handled a tricky question.
Why This Hack Works
This might sound like a lot of work, but it’s incredibly effective.
By recording yourself, you can take the emotion out of it and analyse your performance with fresh eyes. You’ll make tweaks, and with each interview, you’ll get better.
It’s simple. It’s powerful. And it’s something everyone can do.
So, next time you have an online interview, hit record.
You might just be surprised at how much you can improve.
Good luck, and happy interviewing!
