These 3 Questions Are Always Asked in Interviews… Here’s How to Answer Them
Dec 05, 2024Preparing for interviews is not easy. No matter how much you prep, you will never be able to anticipate all the questions that will come up.
But I've had over 300 clients through my Creative Career Level Up programme and there are 3 questions that I have found consistently come up in interviews.
In fact, at least 1 of these 3 has come up in every interview I've ever done.
Here’s the 3 questions. And how to answer them.
1. Why Are You Leaving Your Current Role?
This question is a classic, and it's important to answer thoughtfully.
Even if you’re leaving for negative reasons, never badmouth your current employer.
Instead, keep your response positive and future-focused.
For example, if you've been in your current role for more than a year, try something like:
“I’ve really enjoyed my time here, but I’m ready for a new challenge. I’m looking for an opportunity where I can grow and contribute in ways that align with (insert something about the company/role you are interviewing with), and when I saw your role, I felt it was a great fit.”
If you’ve been in your role for a shorter time and it looks like you’re leaving too soon, say something like:
“The company is great, but the role has changed from what we initially discussed, so I’m looking for a position that (insert something about the role you are interviewing for)”
The key is to avoid focusing on negatives and instead highlight the exciting new opportunities you're seeking.
2. Why Do You Want to Work Here?
This question isn’t about you - it’s about them. Companies want to know why you’re interested in their organisation, not just how the role fits into your personal goals.
Instead of answering with something personal like, “I’ve always admired the company” or “I love your products,” focus on how you align with their mission.
For example, if you’re interviewing at Apple, instead of saying:
“I’ve always loved Apple products,” try:
“I believe Apple’s innovation is transforming the world by making technology more accessible and connected. I’d love to be part of a team that challenges the norm and improves our lives.”
This shows you’re motivated by their mission and goals - not just your own.
3. Do You Have Any Questions for Me?
This is where you can really shine by showing you’ve thought about how you can add value to the company. Avoid generic questions like, “What’s the company culture?”
Instead, ask something that shows you’re thinking about success and impact.
For example:
“If I were hired, what would success look like in the first 90 days?”
Other great options include:
- “What are the biggest challenges your team is facing, and how could I help address them?”
- “How do you measure success for this role?”
These questions demonstrate that you’re already thinking about how to make a meaningful contribution.
By preparing thoughtful answers to these common interview questions, you'll show you’re focused on the company’s needs and ready to add value right from the start.
Keep it positive, focus on their goals, and good luck with your interviews!
