My client secured an interview at Google. Despite being rejected. Hereโs how he did it.
Dec 07, 2023My client has big global tech on his hit-list of companies he wants to work for.
So when a role at Google came up, he was pretty excited.
He prepared what he thought was a great application.
Submitted it via their online portal.
And waited.
The next day, he got a rejection email.
He was devastated.
But my client would not take ‘no’ for an answer.
And less than a week later, he had secured a first round interview.
As of today, he is nearing final stages.
How did he do that, you might ask?
Here’s the 3 steps he took to turn rejection into first round interview
1. He asked himself ‘what problems are Google trying solve with this job?’
The secret to applications that stand out is to understand what problems the company are trying to solve for with this job.
Job hunting is not about you. It is about YOU being the solution to their problem.
And you can’t understand how to position yourself as the solution until you know what the problem is.
Ask people. Do online research. Listen to podcasts.
Get under the skin of the company until you deeply understand what problems they are solving for.
2. He created a piece of work that explained how he was the solution
Once he knew the problems this hiring manager faced, he created a piece of work that positioned himself as the solution.
In this case it was a video.
But you should pick whatever format makes the most sense for the work you want to present.
It’s all about story-telling. Pick the media that allows for the greatest story-telling.
3. He got it into the hands of the Hiring Manager
Once you have an amazing piece of work, you need to get it into the hands of the hiring manager.
Use whatever means possible - Linkedin, your network, go down to their office and physically hand over a copy.
Whatever you need to do, just make sure they see it!
4. And waited for the phone to ring
If you have done a good job of positioning yourself as the solution, it will be very hard for the Hiring Manager to ignore.
Going to these lengths not allows you to really position yourself as a solution for them, but also to show the soft skills that companies like Google respect -resilience, thinking outside the box, determination.
