‘Im getting interviews but no one is offering me a job’

Nov 14, 2024

Today I’m analysing the situation of a guy I met via TikTok. Let’s call him Tom.

Tom works in sales and has been job-hunting for 9 months.

What’s the challenge?

Despite having a consistent flow of interviews, Tom has not managed to secure a new job in 9 months of trying. He started off super confident. But as time has dragged on with no offers, the confidence is waning.

How did he get here?

Tom has fallen into the classic trap many people fall into with interviews. Because we don’t interview very often, it is easy to take the interviews lightly. Especially if you feel confident.

I hear all the time from people who say ‘Im really good at interviewing’. But they are failing to secure roles. If you are failing to secure roles, despite being great at interviews, then you probably aren’t as good at interviews as you think.

Interviewing is not just about answering questions. It’s about having a strategy and knowing your pitch for the role. And then weaving your pitch through every aspect of the interview, including the Intro and the Outro pitches.

How can he move forward?

Tom needs to take a completely different approach to interviewing.

Nailing the pitch

First of all, Tom needs to work out his pitch for every single interview he has. He needs to understand how he will add value in the role and how he can position himself as the solution to the problems of the Hiring Team.

Tailor by individuals

And he needs to tailor that pitch for every single person he meets. The pitch to the Creative Director should not be the same as the pitch to the Sales Director. They are both motivated by different things. Tom needs to understand each person he is interviewing with and tailor his pitch to that person.

If you have no idea how to pitch in an interview, check out my Pitch and Position mini-course for step-by-step learning on how to nail any interview pitch.

Ask great questions

Tom also needs to get better at asking questions. He told me his favourite question to ask is ‘Can you tell me the growth opportunities with this company?’. And while there isn’t an issue with this question per se, Tom would be better off asking questions that further support his pitch as the solution to their hiring problems.

A question like ‘What does success look like in this role?’ is a much better question and shows the hiring team that Tom is focused on being successful in the role should he get it.

Outro Pitch

Tom should also introduce an Outro pitch. Clients on my Creative Career Level Up programme successfully use Outro pitches in interviews all the time.

An Outro pitch is the final pitch you give before wrapping up the interview. Its your chance to reiterate why you are the must-hire candidate for the role and leave the interviewer 100% clear on how you will add value in the role.

There is so much more to interviewing than just answering questions. I'm confident once Tom incorporates a strong pitch, asks great questions and really nails his Outro pitch, that a successful offer will not be far away.
