Here’s the ONE interview question you need to ask upfront to transform your job interviews
May 25, 2023‘Do you have any questions?’ is often a question that gives candidate the biggest challenge in an interview.
Asking the right questions in an interview can be just as powerful as answering questions the right way. In fact, I think asking the right questions can not only set you apart from all the other candidates but it can give you a competitive edge in the interview process.
Always ask this question
And there is ONE question that I always encourage my clients to ask UPFRONT in the HR interview that can totally transform the interview process.
It’s a question that is so simple. But if you get a comprehensive answer from the HR team, you immediately give yourself a huge competitive edge over the other candidates.
And it is for this reason that you must be asking this question every single time you interview.
Timing is important
Now the key to this question is that you want to ask it as early as possible in the process - ideally in the very first interview. Because the answer to this question will help inform how you pitch yourself as the must-hire candidate for the rest of the interview process.
And that question is
‘What skills and experience is the hiring team looking for in the candidate they hire for this role?’
Why this works
The reason this question is so powerful is that you might THINK you know what they are looking for in this role and therefore you might THINK you know how you are going to pitch yourself.
But you are only making assumptions.
Hearing it direct from the HR team will ensure you know exactly the right way to pitch yourself based on EXACTLY what they are looking for in the candidate they hire
Don’t just ask it once
And don’t just ask it once. Ask it in every interview you have with the team.
And refine you pitch based on what you hear as an answer.
This is especially helpful if the process is a long one. My interview process with Apple lasted 9 interviews. And by asking this question early on I was able to use the answers I got to pitch myself in all the other interview that followed.
Trust me, this question is an absolute game-changer if used correctly.
